Cambridge scientists publish landmark breast cancer research study

FUTURE generations of women could avoid unnecessary and potentially harmful breast cancer treatment after a groundbreaking and landmark breast cancer research study published in Nature on 18 April 2012.  Breast cancer has traditionally been viewed as a single condition with three or four subtypes, but researchers have now discovered that it can be separated into ten distinct types, which give patients significantly different chances of survival. As a result this study is likely to revolutionise the way that breast cancer is diagnosed and treated,

 

Professor Gordon Wishart, leading UK breast surgeon and a co-author on the study, said: “this study will help us to identify those women that have such a good prognosis, that they can be spared toxic cancer treatments such as chemotherapy. In addition this research should now make it easier for scientists to develop specific therapies that will provide more effective treatments for individual subtypes of breast cancer”

 

The research study was an international collaboration between scientists in Cambridge, Nottingham, London and Vancouver and is the largest genetic study of breast cancer ever conducted. The Cambridge University scientists studied DNA from 2,000 breast cancer tumours and compared it against patients’ responses to different treatments and their survival rates.

 

Professor Gordon Wishart, the only Cambridge breast surgeon involved in the study, said: “Nearly all of the cancers studies shared one of ten common genetic signatures, which determined response to treatments and correlated with patient survival”. The study has been praised by breast cancer charities as a step towards individualized and targeted therapy for every breast cancer patient.

 

This scientific breakthrough is unlikely to change breast cancer treatment immediately, but is should lead the way forward for clinical trials in selected groups of treatments and the development of more accurate diagnostic tests that help determine optimal therapy for individual patients.
